The quest to find a really good burger joint in Buenos Aires led me to Brooklyn, a “resto-bar” located on Costa Rica 4588 facing Plaza Armenia, just a hop, skip and jump away from recently reviewed resto-bars, Indiana and Limbo, and the Argentine steakhouse, Minga.

I was splitting the burger with a buddy of mine and we decided to order up the Americana Burger. The menu said it came with cheddar, pancetta, lettuce and pickles. Pretty much a standard cheeseburger with a slab of bacon on top. As always we specified that the burger be cooked “jugoso” (the closest thing they have to medium rare in these parts) to avoid getting the slab of leather that we’re usually served when we fail or forget to specify (and sometime even when we DO specify “jugoso”).

In a timely manner our burger arrived. The place was not very busy though, so perhaps this was not the best occasion to test the ability of the cooks and waiters to handle a busy restaurant.

The burger looked good enough on arrival. A big dome bun and lots of fresh ingredients. We sliced it and could see it was cooked perfectly with an ever so slight bit of pink in the very middle. I could see that the cheese was going to be a disappointment. It was this creamy, oozing yellow stuff that resembled “Cheez Whiz” or that “nacho cheese” from the concession stand at the ballpark. All you gringos catch my drift? Whatever you call it ... it’s not real cheese and it’s a violation of the Third Commandment of the Ten Commandments of Burgers ... “Thou shalt not put bright yellow, oozing stuff on a burger!”

The patty was better than the horrible one on the burger at Indiana a block away but only barely better. The texture was okay but it was, as usual, way short on the good stuff (juicy delicious fat). The rest was okay but after violating two such important rules the rest was pointless.

Bottom line. I’m still in search of the Holy Grail in Buenos Aires.
