Our search for the best restaurants in Buenos Aires for having a mid-day meal led me to Freud & Fahler in Palermo Soho. For lunch, every day, they offer a prix-fixe menu consisting of between one to three courses plus a glass of wine for a pricing ranging from US$10.50 to $18.50 (ARP$130 to $230). This is the price for each course combination:

Appetizer and a glass of wine – ARS$130 (about US$10.50)

Appetizer, dessert and a glass of wine – ARS$190 (about US$15.50)

Main course dish and a glass of wine – ARS$150 (about US$12)

Main course dish, dessert and a glass of wine – ARS$190 (about US$15.50)

I had an early reservation on Saturday afternoon. At the time of my arrival there was only one other table occupied. I was seated at a small table near the rear of the restaurant and presented the lunch and evening menu. The restaurant has an ambiance that is interesting. It is austere and sparsely decorated with no artwork on the walls. But this stark canvas only highlighted the collection of “country-style” ceramic vases, cookie jars, and big flower arrangements. The décor was very pleasant.

There were two young waitresses attending to about 16 tables in the dining room. By 2 p.m. the room was completely full but the waitresses were doing an adequate job of handling the full restaurant (quite a challenge with 8 tables per waitress).

I elected to have a main course dish, an appetizer and the glass of wine for US$15 (ARP$190).

For the main course I chose the tagliatelle with pancetta, chives, a poached egg and a small slice of brie cheese. The pasta was hand-made and fresh. I broke the egg and spread it throughout the dish and cut the slice of brie into several pieces, any one of which I could eat with a bite of pasta.

However, because the waitress was quite busy after my order arrived I was unable to catch her attention for several minutes. The pasta was slightly under seasoned and was in dire need of some salt and pepper. I slowly nibbled on the pasta as I attempted to gain her attention. Once seasoned the pasta was slightly better but it wasn’t until I was down to the last ten or so bites that I was experiencing the full potential of the dish. At the bottom of the pasta bowl I was able to get bites of pasta that were fully coated in the egg with lots of morsels of the pancetta. It was only in these last few bites that I was really satisfied with this course.

I then elected to have the bitter chocolate crème brûlée. The dessert was good (I am a fan of bitter chocolate) but had a bit of a firmer consistency than is typical for crème brûlée, likely due to the excessive amount of chocolate required to achieve the desired flavor.

Having a fresh home-made and well executed pasta dish, a dessert and a glass of wine for $190 is a reasonable proposition. There are some other restaurants in our search for the best prix-fixe lunch that have a similar meal for slightly less but at this price the meal certainly beats what you’d pay at most restaurants in the neighborhood for lunch from the regular menu. Good enough for it to garner fairly high marks in our overall rating.
