Summary

New breed of more modern steakhouse with younger waiters and waitresses than your traditional Argentine parilla. But on a recent visit the steaks were overcooked and the service was lacking

Restaurant Review for Miranda - Buenos Aires

USA Today's Top 10 Website had Miranda listed as one of BA’s top 10 steakhouses so I had to try the place out for our Best Steakhouse in BA face-off.

Miranda is one of the more modern steakhouses that are springing up all over Buenos Aires. A place that serves the same grilled meat, but in a more modern and trendy atmosphere. I went to Miranda with a friend recently. The décor is minimalist and nice. Not much clutter and none of the archaic chandeliers like you might see in a typical parilla or bodegón.

The tall ceiling spanning some 20 meters and the tall windows allowing the steakhouse to be bathed in sunlight impart a clean and bright ambiance. The waiters and waitresses are younger and friendlier than your more traditional male staff with black aprons. Each window sill is adorned with a cactus plant. No paintings on the walls. Just the galvanized metal smoke stacks rising above the kitchen grills. I personally found this more modern and minimalist approach to be a nice change of pace.

My friend and I ordered up something Miranda calls the “Ojo con el Bife”, a rib-eye steak that is accompanied by roasted potatoes and a fried egg nestled down in a roasted red pepper slice. And a pork tenderloin called the “Solomillo Costa Rica y Fitz Roy” that comes with a grilled sweet potato, onion and tomato with the further addition of a slice or two of a roasted apple. We specified the steak should be cooked a punto leaning toward jugoso. Pink in the middle.

First up, was a wood plate full of fresh bread and a soft spread similar to hummus. The bread, a country white and wheat bread medley, was a pleasant change from the typical boring pieces of baguette that the unimaginative restaurateurs of BA always throw out on the table.

We divided up the two dishes evenly among ourselves. The full medley added to my single plate can be seen in the slider images above. In addition to a standard chimichurri we were provided two ramekins of a sweet onion relish and a jalapeño jelly. The sauces were excellent and were a welcome change from the pickled eggplant you typically would see in an Argentine steakhouse.

That’s where the good news ended. The steak and the pork tenderloin were both overcooked. And the steak was a poor piece of meat ... very chewy. I sat there chewing, and chewing as if I had chewing gum in my mouth. A truly substandard cut of meat.

The young waiter, originally quite friendly, disappeared and the other young waiter and waitress were too busy flirting with each other to attend to the patrons. Also, came to find out they had a special lunch menu for much less than what we paid for our overcooked meals. The waiter failed to mention this option, apparently attempting to increase the bottom line on the check with the more expensive items off the regular menu.

Miranda is pleasant enough inside. The more modern and minimalist décor is an interesting and welcome change in an Argentine steakhouse. But this one positive element surely wasn’t enough to make up for the below average service and execution of the meal. USA Today’s correspondent totally missed the mark naming Miranda on of the top 10 steakhouses in Buenos Aires. We’ve eaten in five steakhouses in Palermo Hollywood alone that scored higher than this one. La Dorita, El 22, El Trapiche, Las Cabras and La Gran Hollywood are all better options within walking distance in my opinion, unless of course cactus in the windows rates higher than the taste of the steak on your rating scale.
