Restaurant Review for Maria Felix - Buenos Aires

I truly adore Mexican cuisine. The raw and bold flavors, the manner in which simple ingredients like corn and beans are elevated to new levels, and the use of peppers of all varieties and levels of heat to bring a unique personality to the cuisine make Mexican food unique and place it on a level with the cuisines of the far east that similarly use peppers and spices to make simple ingredients explode with flavor.

The inability to find a restaurant that offered, much less executed, authentic Mexican recipes in South America has been a source of frustration for the more than five years that I have lived in Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Well that frustration came to an end today with my visit for dinner to María Felix in Palermo Soho, in Buenos Aires. This restaurants, my friends, albeit owned by Argentines, is a high-quality restaurant offering authentic Mexican recipes. And on my visit, the execution was near flawless on each dish.

The unique menu and bold flavors were surpassed by the excellent and friendly service from the waitress.

The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of an old building at Guatemala and Godoy Cruz. The décor is simple and authentically Mexican. Pleasant Mexican music playing softly in the background. Colorful hand painted plates. Both homemade corn and flour tortilla chips and a delicious salsa for dipping. It all made for a nice ambiance that was a pleasant mix of refined and rustic.

The waitress was friendly, informative and constantly attentive. And the food?

We ordered a chicken mole taco appetizer and a small shrimp taco appetizer. The chocolate mole was rich and flavorful and the shrimp taco was equally delicious.

We ordered the Budín Azteca, a Mexican casserole recipe that is similar to Italian lasagna with Mexican tortillas replacing the pasta. It was covered in a delicious creamy sauce and topped with bits of crispy tortilla chips. Perfectly executed. And the Carnitas de Puerco, bits of meat slowly braised piled on a corn tortilla, were rich and flavorful as well. That plate was accompanied with two small ramekins of beans and rice, traditional Mexican side dishes.

Overall this was a very good experience. This restaurant is not the type that would even be considered for a Michelin star but deserves high praise for an admirable attempt to deliver authentic Mexican cuisine in a region where that is a true rarity and for hiring a wait staff that is both friendly and efficient. In a country that is sadly devoid of culinary variety, María Felix scores big points on originality as well. If you’re unfamiliar with Mexican cuisine or just craving a good rendition of Mexican cuisine with a wide variety of unique recipes on the menu, María Felix is perhaps the best choice in Buenos Aires.
