Summary

A unique take on an Argentine steakhouse. The dining room is adorned with album covers from British and American pop/rock classics. Interesting place. Friendly staff. Good food and service at a reasonable price. Worth a visit.

Restaurant Review for La Bandurria - Buenos Aires

I was researching candidates for an upcoming post on the Best Brews in BA. I was having an artisan (Cerveza Deneben) brew at Oliverio at the Corner of Dorrego and Nicaragua, and across the way I spotted La Bandurría, yet another steakhouse that has recently opened their doors in Palermo Hollywood. It was time for dinner so my friend and I decided we could do with a good meat-centric dinner. Why not add La Bandurría to the long list of steakhouses we were sampling for the Best Steakhouse in BA face-off feature? This evening we could kill two birds with one stone.

Off we went. This place is way different than any steakhouse I’ve seen in Buenos Aires. One of the owners is a huge fan of British and American pop and rock classics and the décor reflects his obsession. Tastefully adorning the walls are album covers and other memorabilia from the golden age of rock. Big aluminum pendant lights hanging above each table threw plenty of light on the table but allowed the lighting in the room to be set pleasantly low so as not to be abrasive, unlike the bright and annoying light we’ve recently encountered, at El Trapiche, for example. Needless to say, some pop-rock classics were faintly heard in the background.

The tables were set with obligatory leather place mats, but unlike the traditional black or brown leather, these were a deep red color. They added a little splash of needed color to the otherwise neutrally decorated dining room.

Our waitress, sporting quite a few tattoos, was both informative and friendly, unlike the stale and somewhat unfriendly, waiters we typically encounter in BA steakhouses. She provided excellent service throughout the entire meal.

The menu was your typical array of Argentine steakhouse items. Nothing particularly unique in either the meats or side dishes. The plates were priced in the mid-range of what we’ve been seeing lately with the main meat dishes ranging in price from US$10 (ARP$125) to US$13.75 (ARP $170).

We actually elected to skip the steaks. Instead, we decided to split a grilled chorizo (sausage) for an appetizer. The rack of pork ribs looked pretty enticing in the menu description so we ordered the ribs and a side plate of grilled vegetables.

The ribs were cooked quite perfectly with a tart and delicious sauce poured over the top. Included, was a plate full of papas españoles (potato chips). The grilled veggies were also very good. You can see the distinct grill marks in the image in the slider on both the veggies and the chorizo. They all had pleasant smoky taste. Everything was cooked perfectly, the service was everything we had hoped for, and the ambiance was unique and pleasant. The owner even came over and talked with us a bit about his partner’s music obsession.

This turned out to be one of the best steakhouse experiences we’ve encountered. In my opinion, they’ve done a much better job of presenting a steakhouse in a different and more contemporary setting. Much more successful, for example, than the more acclaimed Minga in Palermo Soho or Miranda and Carmín, just a few blocks away.|

If you’re in Palermo Hollywood looking for a change of pace from the quirky La Dorita or the circus over at Las Cabras give La Bandurría a visit. We think you’ll be impressed, as we were.

Note: There is supposedly a nice terraza but we didn’t go out there on this last visit to La Bandurría. We’ll commit to having dinner on the terraza sometime soon and we’ll update the post after our visit.
